About UEF

Imagine a world where access to clean energy is not a barrier to progress...

A world where children can study after sunset without using kerosene lamps, where small and medium businesses can thrive, powered by reliable electricity instead of polluting diesel generators. A world where health facilities can expand their services to include cold storage that extends the life of medications and attending to patients at night.

In Africa, where over 600 million people live without electricity, the UEF is the appropriate mechanism to tackle this problem and significantly improve people’s lives. As a multi-donor fund, it provides results-based financing (RBF) incentives to clean energy companies, with the objective of speeding up and scaling up energy access across Sub-Saharan Africa and beyond, in line with SDG7 and the Paris Agreement.

Since its launch in 2020, the UEF has rapidly expanded its reach, focusing on mini-grids in Benin, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Madagascar, Sierra Leone and Nigeria, where a programme is boosting stand-alone solar solutions for businesses and households.

Our
Vision

We aspire to become a USD 500 million multi-donor fund, powering progress and improving people’s lives in Africa and beyond.

Our vision is a world where sustainable energy empowers communities, fuels socio-economic development, and paves the way for a better future.

How do we achieve this? We act as a catalyst, rewarding achievements with results-based grants by supporting organisations that deliver verified electricity connections in unserved or underserved communities. Every home, business, school or health facility connected to sustainable energy brings us closer to our ambitious goals:

- Over 500,000 electricity connections verified
- 2,5 million people benefiting from clean energy and clean cooking
- 8,000 full-time equivalent jobs supported
- 1 million tons CO2 of carbon emissions

The UEF's mechanism is a powerful engine for positive change. By empowering communities, reducing environmental impact, and accelerating progress towards a sustainable future, we leave a lasting positive impact on millions of lives.
